Upperman vs Smith County Softball

3-17-2016

The Lady Bees opened their 8AA season on a high note Thursday afternoon in Baxter beating district foe Smith County 7-2.

“It was a great way to start district play, we had a few plays I wish we could take back, but overall it was a solid effort.

I was really proud of our girls.” Upperman wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as sophomore Riley Hurst singled up the middle to plate Hannah Hughes. Three batters later senior, Abby Collier, dropped a ball into right field to score Sierra Denton and Riley Hurst to make the score 3-0 after one inning.

Upperman would add a run in the third as senior Kelsey Hill sacrifice bunted Riley Hurst home to make the score 4-0 after three. The Lady Bees would add on another run in the fourth as Abby Collier singled to shallow left field to start the inning.

After Michelle Carr sacrifice bunted Collier to second two batters later Junior Raegan Patton doubled to score Collier, making the score 5-0 after four.

The Lady Owls tried to make the game interesting in the top of the fifth by scoring two runs off of a Lady Bee throwing error to pull the game to 5-2. Upperman got all the insurance it would need in the bottom of the sixth though as Collier and Carr led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Savannah Greenwood then sacrificed the runners to third and second respectively. Patton then capped off her three for three night by doubling to left field and scoring Collier and Carr.

Senior Shelby Pullum led the Lady Bees in the circle tonight. Pullum went 5 2/3 innings giving up five hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out one and walking one.

Myra Holbrook put the finishing touches on Smith County by going the final 1 1/3 inning giving up one hit and striking out two. “I am extremely proud of our pitchers tonight, they do exactly what we ask them to do and that is keeping us in ball games. Hats off to them and their great effort tonight.”

Upperman was led at the plate tonight by Raegan Patton going 3-3 with a double and three RBI’s, Abby Collier going 3-3 with two RBI’s, and Riley Hurst going 2-3 with an RBI.

The Lady Bees have the weekend off, but get right back to action with a double header at home against Watertown Monday at 5 o’clock. The Lady Bees will get back to district action the next night at Livingston Academy at 4:30.
