CHS Tennis Teams Capture District 6AAA Titles

With a pair of wins over rival White County Tuesday at the Cavalier Courts, Cookeville captured both District 6-AAA tennis titles.

Shutting out the Warriorettes 9-0, the Lady Cavs claimed their sixth championship in seven years with a perfect district record.

“Our girls have been remarkable consistent,” Coach Brian Rohr said.  “We don’t have any seniors, so the future looks bright.”

Cookeville dropped only a single game in the three girls doubles matches.  Caroline McCarter and Hudson Taylor were first off the court with and 8-0 win over Haley Houston and Maelybeth Young.  Sara Gaw and Natalie Crooks defeated Megan Holland and Laney Oakes 8-1 on the first court.  On court three, Olivia Foutch and Kat Livingston blanked Emma Stewart and Heidi Whitaker.

Gaw outslugged Holland 8-3 on the No. 1 singles court, and Emma Cate Jones beat Houston 8-4 to seal the win.  Bailey Dillon (8-1 over Young at No. 4), Foutch (8-2 over Stewart at No. 5), and Chloe Rippetoe (8-1 over Whittaker at No. 6) also claimed wins.

The Cavaliers dominated district play for the fourth consecutive season.

“We still have some work to do, but the senior boys have not lost a district match in their four years,” Rohr said.  “Jake, Tanner, Jacob, and Michael have definitely left their mark on the program.”

Cookeville also swept the boys doubles matches.  Jake Ward and Tanner Cagle took out Cole Crosland and Nick Carter in the top match 8-2.  At No. 2, Jacob McCarter and Marlon Ngo beat Peyton Mitchell and Dylan Summers 8-3.  Alek Kriskovich and Michael Gray won the final match 8-0 over Tyler Vaughn and Eli McCormick.

In singles, Cagle outlasted Mitchell 8-5, and McCarter beat Summers 8-1 to seal the win.  Other winners were Garrett Barker (8-3 over Carter at No. 4), Ethan George (8-1 over McCormick at No. 5), and Chris Sheets (8-3 over Vaughn at No. 6).  Crosland beat Ward for the Warriors’ only win.

Cookeville’s match at Glencliff Friday will round out regular season play.  The District 6-AAA tournament will be held May 5-9 at CHS.
