Investigators say the driver refused to stop for officers and a pursuit ensued.  Once the pursuit entered White County, deputies from the White County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Sparta Police Department attempted to get the subject to stop fleeing.

Detectives say the subject sideswiped and rammed several law enforcement vehicles during the pursuit.  Three patrol vehicles were reportedly damaged.

TBI officials say an officer from the Sparta Police Department and a deputy with the White County Sheriff’s Office opened fire on the male subject’s vehicle in an attempt to stop the subject.

After the officers fired on the truck, the vehicle ran off the side of the road and crashed into a tree on the side of Highway 111 North.  The subject was pronounced dead on the scene.  The TBI has not confirmed the identity of any of the people involved in the incident and there is no word on the extent of injuries for the three officers.  However, the injuries to the officers were from the vehicle collision.

Highway 111 North will remain closed for an unforeseen amount of time.  Motorists are advised to use alternate routes.
