Kids Fishing Derby June 10 at Cane Creek Park

COOKEVILLE – Cane Creek Park welcomes young fishermen to try their luck Saturday morning during Cookeville Leisure Services’ 28th annual Kids Fishing Derby.

The free event, hosted in partnership with the Tennessee Tech University Student Fisheries Association and Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency on Tennessee’s Free Fishing Day, is for ages 1-15. No fishing license is required.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at the park’s concession stand. Fishing will be from 8:30-10:30 a.m.

Participants are encouraged to bring fishing gear and cast their lines for catfish and other fish in a freshly stocked, netted-in area of the lake. Prizes will be awarded for catches in various categories at 11 a.m.

On Free Fishing Day, anyone may fish for free without a license in Tennessee’s public waters, TWRA-owned and operated lakes and state park facilities. TWRA provides the annual free day in hopes of increasing interest in fishing. Children ages 15 and younger may fish without a license from Free Fishing Day through June 16.

The day and week are annual events in Tennessee that are intended to introduce children to the enjoyment and excitement of a day on the water catching fish. TWRA is among several organizations planning special fishing events, primarily for youngsters. It annually stocks several thousand pounds of fish for various events.
