Cookeville, TN – At approximately 11:00 p.m. on December 6, 2017, officers were dispatched to 102 Terry Avenue in reference to a drug overdose complaint.
When officers arrived, an adult female living in the home told officers that Brian K. Cooper (age 44) had threatened to harm himself and was in possession of several firearms. Additionally, officers were told that a 4-year-old child was also inside the home.
While the officers were investigating, they encountered Mr. Cooper inside the home. Mr. Cooper immediately confronted the officers and retreated into an inner room shutting the door. A gunshot was then heard from the inner room. Officers retreated to a safe location and attempted to communicate with Mr. Cooper.
After communication attempts failed, the Cookeville Police Department’s SWAT team and Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) were called to assist. After SWAT officers arrived, the child was successfully removed from the residence unharmed. Attempts to negotiate with Mr. Cooper were met with negative results. Mr. Cooper was eventually taken into custody by SWAT officers.
Mr. Cooper was transported to the Cookeville Regional Medical Center for evaluation. This
investigation continues and charges are pending on Mr. Cooper.
