Putnam County 4-H Horse Group Successful at Regional and State Competitions

 

Putnam County 4-H members recently competed in the Central Region 4-H Horse Bowl and Hippology Contest on January 20, 2018 in Lebanon on the Cumberland University Campus.

Putnam County’s Junior (4th & 5th grades) Hippology team consisted Ashley Shaw, Grayson Jones, Kiyah Howell, and Zoey Graff. This team placed 3rd in the Junior division.  Ashley placed 3rd place individual in the Junior Division. The Junior High team (6th – 8th grades) consisted of Tehya Howell, Mallory Johnson, Nathan Smuin, and Gracey Hurst.  Our Junior High team also represented us in the Horse Bowl competition as well.  Abi Smuin represented us in Senior Divison.

So what is HIPPOLOGY?  Does this word sound Greek to you? Well it is – “Hippo” is the Greek word for horse and “ology” means the study of. The Hippology Contest is a team contest consisting of three or four members with teams being divided into three age divisions.  Individuals identify breeds, colors, tack, equipment, feeds, and much more, taking a written test and identification test, while also judging two classes of horses.

The Junior team earned the right to represent Putnam County at the State 4-H Hippology Contest which was held on the University of Tennessee Campus in Knoxville on February 24th.  The state team consisted of Ashley Shaw, Kiyah Howell, and Zoey Graff.  They represented Putnam County well taking 9th place team and Ashley Shaw earned 1st Place High Individual Overall.

Congratulations to all these 4-H’ers for their dedication and interest in the horse project. Anyone interested in horses is encouraged to join this active group of 4-H’ers.  Many fun and exciting activities are planned to prepare the horse project group for the upcoming Regional Horse Judging Contest as well as other horse related events.
