WestSide Scavenging Fun Returns Jan. 13
COOKEVILLE – Cookeville’s historic WestSide district will soon be a destination for “scavengers” during Cookeville Leisure Services’ sixth annual WestSide Scavenger Hunts.
The first of three Saturday hunts will take place Jan. 13 starting at the Cookeville Depot Museum at 116 W. Broad St. The others are planned for Feb. 10 and March 10. Participation is free.
“It’s a game,” Ashley McKee, Cookeville museums education specialist, said, noting that participants need to bring a digital camera or cell phone. “We want to get people outside and exploring this historic part of town, even if you have to bundle up. We try to make it worthwhile by offering warm drinks, refreshments and a chance to win a prize.”
Entry forms, which have thumbnail images and rhyming clues that lead to items in several WestSide businesses, may be picked up at the Cookeville Depot beginning at 10 a.m. The goal is to find each image, replicate it with a digital camera or cell phone and then return the completed form by 2 p.m. Those successfully completing the task will be entered in a drawing to win that month’s gift basket from participating businesses.
“WestSide Scavenger Hunts are a free family activity to get people out and about on the WestSide,” McKee said. “Whether you revisit historic places or meet new WestSide neighbors, it’s fun to complete a puzzle.”
McKee said the activity has had a good turnout in the past, attracting families, student groups and more for a fun and educational walk around the historic district.
“We normally have 50 to 75 participants and even had record-breaking attendance last year,” she said. “It appeals to all ages.”
