Drumming circle, hula hoop flow dancing June 30 at Dogwood Park
COOKEVILLE – A community drumming circle, along with hula hoop flow dancing, will be presented June 30 at Dogwood Park.
Tennessee Tech University’s Colin J. Hill, professor of percussion studies, and multi-instrumentalist Massood Taj of Franklin, Tenn., are partnering with Cookeville Leisure Services to offer this free event from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in the grassy area behind the Putnam County Library.
“I hope we can expose the community – children and adults – to the joy of drumming,” Hill said. “Regardless of their experience in percussion or music, drum circles are extremely fun and satisfying.”
Taj, who is influenced by the world’s indigenous music, including his own Sufi heritage, agreed.
“It will move your body and soothe your spirit,” he said. “Join us for this life-transforming experience.”
A drumming circle is an ancient form of group meditation that is believed to reduce stress, enhance relaxation and create a sense of community. Participants in Dogwood Park’s event will experience an energetic atmosphere where they are encouraged to interact with others using non-verbal cues.
“This is a fun activity that encourages creativity and communication,” Hill said.
A variety of drums from different cultures, including African, Brazilian and Cuban, will be played.
“Bring your drum and shakers if you have them,” Taj said. “We will also have plenty on hand.”
No drumming experience is necessary. Dancing is welcome.
Hill added, “This event will be a fun family outing and an opportunity to meet new people.”
In addition to the drumming circle, Kat Champlin, hula hoop flow artist, dance instructor and holistic coach, will present hula hoop flow dancing, which combines technical moves and tricks with freestyle or technical dancing.
“In contrast to the classic toy hula hoop, modern hoopers use heavier and larger-diameter hoops and rotate the hoops around parts of the body other than the waist,” Champlin said.
Participants will need to bring their own hula hoops.
