COOKEVILLE, TN — An announcement was made that the theme of the 2018 Cookeville Christmas Parade has been changed.
Everyone knows the story of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, the beloved tale by Dr. Suess. From the Who’s in Whoville to the Grinch who lives on Mt. Crumpit, people of all ages have fallen in love with the characters either by reading the book or watching the many film and tv adaptations of the work.
“A Whoville Christmas” was the original theme for the 2018 Cookeville Christmas parade but as of October 31st, the announcement was made that the theme had been changed. “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is a copyrighted theme that belongs to the Dr. Seuss Enterprises and can only be used if given permission.
The Putnam County, Tennessee Facebook page issued a statement about why the theme had to be changed, “When Dr. Seuss Enterprises, L.P. was consulted, due to contractual restrictions, the company politely refused to grant the use of their licensed material. Therefore, out of respect for the Dr. Seuss brand and in the interest of employing an abundance of caution, the organizers intend to fully honor this request by removing all reference to Dr. Seuss and the Grinch/Whoville story from the parade theme, logo, messaging and décor.”
While the Grinch may not be coming to Cookeville to steak the RoastBeast, there is still some holiday magic to be had come December 8th, when the 52nd Cookeville Christmas parade rolls through the streets.
The new theme of the parade is “A Cookeville Storybook Christmas.”
