COOKEVILLE – Two years ago, Candy Thomas decided it was time to get serious about improving her physical fitness.

“At age 68, I was in average condition,” she said. “I lifted free weights occasionally, but that was it. I wasn’t doing any cardio and my weight lifting was pretty haphazard.”

Then she learned about Fit Frenzy, an annual event that offers a free sampling of Cookeville Leisure Services fitness classes all in one morning at the Cane Creek Recreation Center.

“It appealed to me to be able to get a peek and not have to actually sign up for the first class,” she said. “That’s what got me to go.”

And she’s been going ever since.

The next Fit Frenzy is Jan. 19 from 9-11:30 a.m. at 180 C C Camp Road near Cane Creek Park. Attendees – who may participate or just observe – have 16 classes to choose from, and door prizes will be given away in every class:

  • 9 a.m. – Power Hour, Spin 30, PiYo, Yoga Flow
  • 9:30 a.m. – Step & Strength, Fit 4 Life, STAC (Strength Training and Conditioning), Vinyasa Yoga
  • 10 a.m. – Cardio Core, Chair Yoga, STAC, Vinyasa Yoga
  • 10:30 a.m. – Boot Camp, Hustle & Muscle, Bend
  • 11 a.m. – Frenzy Finale: Zumba Party

Class descriptions are available at www.cookeville-tn.gov/ls/fitness.

Jen Webb, Cookeville Leisure Services special programs coordinator, said Fit Frenzy is an opportunity for people to find their “soulmate workout” without having to give up several hours or days to do so.

“You can come and do it all in just a couple of hours,” she said.

Finding that one perfect class, she noted, is the key to returning on a regular basis.

“When you really like something and know what to expect, it’s easy to carve out the time,” she said.

For Thomas, that class turned out to be Strength Training and Conditioning.

“STAC is my class,” she said. “I come three times a week.”

She’s noticed improvements in her health over the past couple of years.

“My blood pressure had been creeping up before I started,” she said. “Now I’m 70 and have the blood pressure of someone half my age.”

She’s made new friends, too.

“I can’t say enough about the people and the classes,” she said. “We encourage and check up on each other. It’s motivating.”

The Fit Frenzy lineup includes Fit 4 Life, a new class, and Chair Yoga, an ongoing class but one that has never been offered during Fit Frenzy.

“Fit 4 Life is great for people 50 and older as well as people recovering from an injury or those who haven’t worked out in a long time,” Webb said.

Chair Yoga, a full-body stretch class with exercises that can be done while sitting, is ideal for the same demographic.

“We really have something for everyone, no matter your fitness level,” Webb said.

Cookeville Leisure Services fitness classes are offered daily at the Cane Creek Recreation Center for $3 each, with no membership fee or contract required. Fit Cards are available for $30 (11 classes for the price of 10), but a special buy-one-get-one-half-price rate will be offered during Fit Frenzy.
