COOKEVILLE – Want a taste of pioneer life? Come to the Cookeville History Museum’s Pioneer Day History Hike this Saturday.
“This is the third year of Pioneer Day, and we are bringing back some station favorites as well as adding new ones,” Ashley McKee, Cookeville museums education specialist, said of the free event to be held from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at 40 E. Broad St. “Participants will be butter making, quill writing and doing some washboard laundry.”
Also on hand will be a living history pioneer in historical dress discussing spring chores and cotton carding as well as a fibers artist from Tennessee Tech University’s Appalachian Center for Craft demonstrating a table loom and pioneer weaving skills.
“In addition, there will be an animal pelt station to show the value of trapping and trading and soap carving as a means to demonstrate beginner woodworking,” McKee said.
All stations are hands-on and will feature several take-away items for each participant.
Those who visit all the pioneer stations and complete their entry form will be entered in a prize drawing sponsored by Lazy Cow Creamery. The event is also sponsored by Friends of the Cookeville History Museum.
History Hikes, presented by the Historical Arts Division of the City of Cookeville Department of Leisure Services, take place on the second Saturday of each month, April through October. The fun and educational activity encourages people to get outside and explore downtown Cookeville’s rich history.
