Days are hot, and everything is green and growing. Welcome to June! What an exciting month it is. We are thrilled to announce the long-anticipated grand opening of Park View Skate Park on June 20. Also, outdoor concerts and movies are a highlight at Dogwood Park, as are our summer camps at Cane Creek Recreation Center and Gymnasium. It’s a beautiful time of year. A Place To Skate

Grand opening June 20

The wait is over. Park View Skate Park will officially open June 20 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 3 p.m. at 570 Scott Ave. After that, it’ll be open daily from 7 a.m. to dusk. Cookeville’s first skate park, designed by Seattle-based Grindline Skateparks and Nashville’s HFR Design, features everything skateboarders could want – concrete wall rides, ramps, rails, bowls and more. Want a Dog Park?

We want to hear from you

Cookeville has applied for a grant from Dog Park Dash in anticipation of building a dog park at Cane Creek Park. How much do you want this park? Please tell us so we can use your input to help support our application. Just use #dogparkdash and mention Cookeville in social media posts that support a dog park at Cane Creek Park. For example, post a photo of your dog with a comment such as “We need a dog park in Cookeville!” #dogparkdash #ckvldogpark. You can even send us a letter of support at 45 E. Broad St. Spread the word! We need your help to secure our grant. For more information, call 520-4386.

Athletic Camps

Stay active this summer

Our summer athletic camps offer an opportunity for kids to unplug from electronics and get moving at Cane Creek Gymnasium, 180 C C Camp Road. Registration is open for Basketball Camp, June 3-7, June 24-28 and July 15-19; Lacrosse Camp, June 10-14; and All Sports Camp, June 17-21, July 8-12 and July 22-26. After Dark Movies In The Park

Under the stars

Free movies in Dogwood Park? Absolutely! After Dark Movies in the Park, presented by State Rep. Ryan Williams, will be shown Friday nights in June at 30 E. Broad St. beginning at dark: “Ralph Breaks the Internet” June 7; “Mary Poppins Returns” June 14; “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” June 21; and “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” June 28. A bonus Saturday movie, “Incredibles 2,” will be shown July 6 as part of the City of Cookeville’s fifth annual Red, White and Boom celebration.  Free movies continue Friday nights in July at 8 p.m. with Summer Cinema at the Cookeville Depot Museum, 116 W. Broad St.

Family Fun Frolic

Come and play

Ready for some free family fun? This month’s History Hike will be a Family Fun Frolic on June 8. Stop by the Cookeville Depot Museum or Cookeville History Museum between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. for Checkers, Tic-Tac-Toe, sack racing, hopscotch, corn hole, ring toss, sidewalk, marbles and bubbles. Then stroll down Broad Street between the museums. Participants will be entered in a prize drawing sponsored by Foglight Foodhouse. History Hikes are held the second Saturday of each month, April through October. Kids Fishing Derby

Fish, fun and food

The 31st annual Kids Fishing Derby for ages 15 and under is set for June 8 at Cane Creek Park, 201 C C Camp Road, on Tennessee Free Fishing Day. Register at 7:30 a.m. at Lakeview Shelter. Fishing will be from 8:30-10:30 a.m., followed by a picnic and prizes from 10:30 a.m.-noon. No fishing license is needed on this free event presented by the Tennessee Tech University Student Fisheries Association, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and Cookeville Leisure Services. Participants are encouraged to bring fishing gear and bait. For more information, call 526-7393.

Pokemon Go

Community Day

Pokemon Go Community Day is June 8 from 3-6 p.m., and Dogwood Park’s concession stand will be open for the occasion at 30 E. Broad St. Stop by and enjoy the park along with fellow players as you try to capture Shiny Slakoth.

Sounds of Summer

Cookeville Community Band

It’s summer concert season in Dogwood Park. See the Cookeville Community Band on these Monday nights: June 10 and 24 and July 8 and 22 at 7:30 p.m. This is a free, family-friendly event in a beautiful setting at 30 E. Broad St. Bring a lawn chair or blanket. Concessions will be available. For more information, call 528-1313.

‘I Spy Cookeville’

Can you find…?

Picture riddles and other fun, interactive activities await Cookeville History Museum visitors of all ages in its “I Spy Cookeville” exhibit, which continues through Aug. 24 at 40 E. Broad St. The goal is to find all of the items on the list by examining photos, displays, artifacts and much more. See what you can find. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call 520-5455.

Third Thursday Concert

Bluegrass Solutions

Indulge in a night of banjo, mandolin and fiddle playing as Bluegrass Solutions take the stage June 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Dogwood Park, 30 E. Broad St., as part of the Third Thursday in the Park concert series. Admission is free, and concessions are available. Concerts are also planned for July 18 and Aug. 15, with a different band featured each month. For more information, call 528-1313.

Tai Chi

Meditation in motion

Registration is open for two six-week Tai Chi classes: Tuesdays, June 25-July 30, 5:30-6:30 p.m., and Thursdays, June 27-Aug. 8, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tai Chi promotes serenity through gentle, low-impact movements. All experience levels are welcome to join award-winning martial artist Nikki Desch at Cane Creek Recreation Center, 180 C C Camp Road. Cost is $30 per six-week session. See The Trees

Arboretum

Want to learn to identify native trees? Take a walk along the trail at Cane Creek Park. Sassafras, Red Maple, American Beech and dozens more have been tagged as part of the park’s recent certification as an arboretum by the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council. Same goes for City Lake Natural Area. Enjoy the trees!

Train Tales

Stories and fun

Train Tales is a Friday favorite for preschoolers at the Cookeville Depot Museum, 116 W. Broad St. Enjoy a train story and fun activity from 10:30-11 a.m. Afterward, be sure to explore the cabooses and train cars outside. Admission is free. For more information, call 520-5455

Lake Fun

Boats available daily

Enjoy a scenic ride in a paddleboat, kayak or canoe. They are available daily at the Cane Creek Park concession stand Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m., and Sunday, 1-7 p.m. Four-seater paddleboats are $4 per half hour; single kayaks, $6 per hour; tandem kayaks, $8 per hour; and canoes, $8 per hour. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult and wear a life jacket, which is provided. For more information, call 520-4386.
