Highschool Student Arrested For Threats Against School

COOKEVILLE, TN — A Cookeville High student was arrested Thursday evening after an overheard threat was made involving an assault rifle.

As reports of active shooters become more and more frequent across the nation, and even the world, all eyes and ears are open for any threat that can be looked into.

On Thursday afternoon, a student of Cookeville High approached her mother, telling her that she overheard another student threaten to bring an assault rifle onto school grounds and initiate a shooting, according to officials. The concerned parent contacted a teacher who in turn contacted school administrators and School Resource Officers.

An investigation was conducted by both Cookeville High administration and the SROs to locate the student who had made the threat. Close to midnight Thursday evening, the student was located and arrested at their home.

A release was sent to parents and legal guardians of Cookeville High saying, “The student will not be allowed to return to school until a thorough threat assessment is conducted by a team including school administrators, law enforcement officers, and mental health professionals to determine the level of the threat. School officials will follow the recommendations of the juvenile court and mental health professionals in determining if and when the student could return to school. “
