Gordonsville Baseball, Softball Sweep Series With Smith County By Identical 12-2 Margins In 6 Innings

Smith County and Gordonsville’s baseball and softball programs converged onto South Carthage’s Crump Paris Park Thursday afternoon for a pair of non-district matchups between the baseball and softball rivals.

Both matchups went to Gordonsville by identical scores as both the Tigerettes and Tigers defeated the Lady Owls and Owls, 12-2.

The Tigerettes’ 10-run victory came in 6 innings behind a 16-strikeout performance from pitcher Kailey Plumlee, who surrendered only 2 walks and 4 hits in the victory. Plumlee went 3-3 at the plate with a double and 3 RBIs as well.

Abby Brinkley led Gordonsville offensively as she went 4-4 with 4 doubles, 4 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Callie Dillard added a solo home run as well.

Catcher Abby Woodard and left fielder Lauren Carlyle led Smith County as each went 1-3 with an RBI.

Gordonsville struck first with four runs in the first two innings before Smith County got on the board in the top of the fourth to cut their deficit to 4-1. Smith County responded in the bottom of the frame with two runs to extend their lead to 6-1 entering the fifth.

After a scoreless fifth inning, Gordonsville outscored Smith County 6-1 in the sixth to win by a 12-2 final score.

In baseball action, Gordonsville used a 6-run second inning to cruise to a 12-2 victory in six innings. Kyle Adams earned the victory on the mound as he struck out 7 batters while allowing 4 hits and 3 walks in the complete-game effort.

Gordonsville and Smith County each recorded 4 hits, but the Tigers took advantage of 7 Owl errors in the victory.

Each team scored in the first inning to tie the game at 1-1 entering the second. After a scoreless top-half, Adams started the scoring for Gordonsville in the bottom of the frame by drawing a bases-loaded walk to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead with one out.

A Tucker Smith ground-out drove in Maddux Randolph for the second run before back-to-back Smith County errors allowed 3 more runs to score. Following a hit-by-pitch, an error on a pickoff attempt allowed Tristan Wood to reach home and give Gordonsville a 7-1 lead entering the third inning.

Gordonsville tacked on a run in the bottom of the third and fifth while Smith County scored in the top of the fourth to make the score 9-2 entering the sixth inning, where the Tigers scratched across three runs to win by a 12-2 final score.

Up next for Gordonsville baseball is a trip to Trousdale County on Saturday while the Tigerette softball team is scheduled to play at Watertown on Friday, weather permitting. Smith County baseball is scheduled to play at Beech on Friday while the Lady Owls are set to host Westmoreland on Monday.
