Shannon Smith, Former Cookeville Police Officer, Indicted in Overton County with Theft Charges

Cookeville, T.N. — A former Cookeville Police officer has been indicted on theft charges in Overton County, according to authorities.

Shannon Smith, 48, of Cookeville, was indicted by the Overton County grand jury on two counts of property theft, according to a report.

Smith is accused of taking 17 calves that were owned by Randall Dixon, without his consent.

Smith was booked into the Overton County jail and issued a $20,000 bond.  He was released from jail within an hour.

Authorities say Christopher Hayes, 28, of Cookeville, was also indicted on two counts of theft in the case.

The Cookeville Police Department initially placed Smith on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the case.  However, they now say Smith is no longer employed with the department. Smith reportedly submitted his resignation on Tuesday.
