Fit Frenzy: Sample Fitness Classes Free January 18

Fit Frenzy: Sample fitness classes free Jan. 18

COOKEVILLE – “I wasn’t sure I could do them.”

That’s what Donna Mead of Cookeville once thought about some of the group fitness classes she was interested in trying at Cane Creek Recreation Center.

Sure, she could have dropped in and taken one class at a time, committing an hour per class until she discovered what worked best for her. Instead, Mead attended Fit Frenzy and sampled several classes all in one morning – free.

“It was so much fun,” she said of the annual event offered by Cookeville Leisure Services. “I got to experience all kinds of different classes, instructors and styles.”

One of those was a stationary bike class. Another focused on cardio dance. She also liked the strength training classes that used weights.

She came back for more.

“I feel so much better – not just physically but mentally,” she said of the benefits of group fitness classes. “When I’m stressed I can come here, and I feel so good afterward. I’ve also noticed my clothes fitting better.”

Her outlook has improved, too.

“I’m not afraid to try different classes,” she said.

The next Fit Frenzy is Jan. 18 from 9-11:30 a.m. at 180 C C Camp Road. Attendees, who may participate or just watch, have 16 classes to choose from. Door prizes will be given away in each class.

  • 9 a.m. – Step, Pound Fit, Chair Yoga, Warrior Yoga
  • 9:30 a.m. – Drillz, PiYo, Fit 4 Life, Vinyasa Yoga
  • 10 a.m. – Kick N Core, Power Hour, Latin Zumba, Vinyasa and Yin
  • 10:30 a.m. – Turn Up, STAC, Spin 30, Bend
  • 11 a.m. – Frenzy Finale: Club Cardio Party

Jen Webb, Cookeville Leisure Services special programs coordinator, said Fit Frenzy is an opportunity for people to find their ideal workout without having to devote several hours or days to trying a wide range of classes that may or may not be a good fit for them.

“People try things they wouldn’t normally try,” she said of those attending the event.

Even people who already take classes regularly can benefit.

“A lot of our regulars won’t miss Fit Frenzy because it is so upbeat and exciting,” she said. “Even the instructors get to take each other’s classes, so everybody is really pumped about getting to cheer each other on and try new things.”

Classes are offered in a sample-style format, changing up every half hour and allowing extra time for instructors to give details about each class.

Club Cardio instructor Emily Loy described Fit Frenzy as “20 minutes to jump out of your comfort zone.”

“It’s not like it’s a huge commitment,” she said. “If it’s not your thing, you’re not stuck there for an hour. If it is your thing, you can come back.”

Mead said she’s glad she came back.

“It is so much fun because there are other people like us who come in that we get to know,” she said. “We encourage each other, and sometimes we even holler in class! But I can’t say enough about the instructors here. They’re just wonderful, and they really care about you. They motivate you – and I need motivating.”

Fitness classes are offered daily at Cane Creek Recreation Center. Participants may drop in for $3 per class, with no membership fee or contract required. The first class is free. See the monthly schedule at www.cookeville-tn.gov/ls/fitness.

Fit Cards are available for $30 (11 classes for the price of 10), but a special buy-one-get-one-half-price rate will be offered during Fit Frenzy – 22 classes for $45.

“Our classes are ongoing,” Webb added. “You can jump in any time.”
