PCSS Express Concerns with COVID-19

PCSS Family,

I would like to take a few minutes this afternoon to address the growing concerns with the COVID 19 outbreak and how it affects our school system.

For the moment, the Putnam County School System will remain open. During Spring break, buildings will again be deep cleaned.  The PCSS leadership team will continue our conversations with state and local public health officials as well as our community partners at CRMC to stay abreast of the ever-changing information concerning the COVID 19 virus.

We realize that eventually, a member of the Putnam County community is likely to be exposed to COVID 19. When that occurs, our community and school system must be prepared to help contain the spread of the disease. Our school system has been and will continue to develop contingency plans in the event that school closures become necessary.

As Covid 19 continues to spread across the globe, understandable concerns continue to arise concerning measures to slow the pandemic. The Putnam County School System continues to monitor not only news reports, but we are also remaining in contact with state and local health officials. Our goal is to make decisions based on the most current information available to protect our students, faculty, and staff members.

As we hear from families, there are many that are not concerned about the virus at all and believe the media is blowing the situation out of proportion. These families believe we should continue with school and scheduled activities without interruption. Some are not concerned about the ability of themselves or that of their children to effectively combat the disease but they are concerned that exposure could cause harm to a loved one that is elderly or a family member that has a compromised immune system. Other members of our community are frightened and feel the need to self-quarantine as a preventative measure. All of these viewpoints have merit.

For the moment, we will continue working with local health officials to determine the best approach to protect our school system and our community. We will strive to be as understanding as possible with all PCSS families. We urge everyone to be vigilant in employing universal health precautions to protect yourself and your family.
