Cookeville Football Tops Livingston

The Cookeville Cavaliers continued their strong start to the 2020 football season with a 33-18 win over rival Livingston on Thursday night.

The Cavs moved to 2-0 on the season with the win at Tucker Stadium at Tennessee Tech University.

The 6A Cavaliers rushing attack continued its dominant start to the season early in the game. Senior running back Logan Sides took the opening run of the game up the middle for a 59-yard gain. He then finished off the drive with a two-yard touchdown rush less than two minutes into the game to give the Cavs a 6-0 lead.

The 4A Wildcats responded later in the opening quarter with a four-yard touchdown rush by Parker Coleman to cap off a 7:32 drive and tie the game at six.

Senior CHS quarterback Stockton Owen put the Cavs out in front with a 35-yard touchdown rush on the ensuing drive. Andy Crockett’s PAT pushed the lead to 13-7 at the end of the first quarter.

The score was the beginning of 27 unanswered points by the Cavaliers, all on the ground. Owen added two more touchdowns in the second quarter, and Evan Whited capped the Cavs scoring with a one-yard TD in the third quarter to move the score to 33-6.

The Wildcats scored twice in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit down to the final score of 33-18.

Owen led the way for the Cavs with 170 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 13 carries. He also went 8-10 through the air for 75 yards. Sides rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.

Kaleb Robinson led the way on the ground for the Wildcats, rushing for 64 yards on 10 carries. Coleman rushed for 34 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.

The Wildcats (1-1) will return to the field as they take on Cumberland County on Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Crossville.

Cookeville (2-0) will now turn its attention towards a Region 3/6A matchup with Riverdale in the High School Football Game of the Week. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Murfreesboro. The game will be broadcast live on the Upper Cumberland Reporter’s Facebook page and Newstalk 107.7 FM 1400 AM the HUB.
