Cookeville Volleyball Remains Undefeated With Win Over Sparta

The Cookeville Lady Cavs volleyball team moved to 8-0 on the season with a 3-0 win over the White County Warriorettes Tuesday in Sparta.

The Lady Cavs largely controlled the match, as they rolled to another big win in the wake of a tournament win on Saturday.

“We just came off a big weekend. We had an amazing weekend,” said CHS head coach Jami Cherry. “Playing White County, they’re always a big rival. We know they’re super scrappy. Even our big hitters tonight were digging those balls on the other side. For us to be able to still win those games, that’s still a great win for us. Any time we can walk out of White County’s gym 3-0, that’s a successful night.”

The Lady Cavs took the first the first game 25-15 with the help of a strong-game at the net with aggressive kills.

Sparta adjusted in the second game, as the two rivals went back-and-forth to a 15-15 tie. The Lady Cavs then regained control of the game to take it 25-19.

Sparta opened the third game up 4-2, but the Lady Cavs responded as they won 14 of the next 19 points to capture a 25-12 win, and take the match 3-0.

“We do know we have strong outsides, but they started adjusting to our hitters,” said Cherry. “Our setters stepped up and they were able to make some adjustments too and put the ball in some different places for the hitters to hit the ball where they wanted it. We had to mix it up a lot.”

Mattie Arnett led the way for the Lady Cavs with 12 kills. Blake Cherry Added 9.

Siting at 8-0 with an early-season tournament win, Cherry said she feels good with where her team is at after an unconventional offseason.

“I feel really good with where we’re at,” said Cherry. “We came off this whole COVID thing and not being able to have any preseason. We’re usually 15 games in, but this is our third district game. We’re 3-0 in the district. Starting off at 8-0, I don’t think anyone’s going to complain about that.”

While she is satisfied with the start to the season, Cherry says she knows her team has the potential to do more.

“I do like where we are, but I know that we have the potential to do great things,” said Cherry. “I’m looking forward to an awesome year.”
