The Upperman Bees’ baseball season came to an end on Tuesday in the District 8/AA tournament as they defeated Cannon County, but fell against Watertown.
The Bees opened the day with a thrilling 6-5 win over Cannon County. UHS raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning with RBIs by Carter and Caden Shanks.
The teams then traded runs in the third before Levi Wilken laced an RBI double and the Bees held a 6-2 lead after five innings.
The Lions battled to try and keep their season alive in the sixth, bringing three runs across before UHS turned a double-play to get out of the inning with a 6-5 lead.
Freshman pitcher Wyatt Curtis came on in the seventh inning and slammed the door as the Bees earned the 6-5 lead.
Thomas Ensor got the win for Upperman in his final start of his high school career. He allowed two runs and four hits along with eight walks in four innings. Curtis earned the save.
The UHS bats went cold in the second matchup against Watertown, as WHS pitcher Gage Vastola pitched a no-hitter and the Purple Tigers earned an 11-0 win in five innings.
Both pitchers, Vastola and Caden Shanks, were strong early in the game as the teams battled to a scoreless tie through 3.5 innings. The Purple Tigers then capitalized on two UHS errors and added two timely hits in the third to race out to a 6-0 lead.
They then brought five more runs across the plate in the fourth as they cruised to the victory and earned a berth in the district championship game against Dekalb County.
The Bees finished the 2021 season with a 16-12 record.
