The Monterey Wildcats topped the Upperman Bees 7-0 in each team’s final tune-up before kicking off the 2021 football regular season in jamboree action on Friday in Baxter.
The teams played one regulation quarter to end a night of football where peewee up to the varsity high school teams from each community competed in a series of scrimmages.
“It’s a jamboree. Nobody keeps stats in a jamboree and nobody cares if you win or lose in a jamboree,” said MHS head coach Scott Hughes. “My main focus tonight, is we got out of here healthy.”
Penalties and fumbled snaps were found throughout the quarter. Carter Shanks tallied an interception for the Bees. A roughing-the-punter penalty against UHS extended Monterey’s final drive, and several plays later Matthew Montgomery found Chandler Bowden for a 28-yard touchdown with two seconds remaining in the quarter to make it 7-0.

“We’ve got a lot of stuff we’ve got to clean up, but scrimmages and jamborees get chippy because kids get emotional,” said Hughes. “It’s a glorified scrimmage, but we will address it.”
The Wildcats will open the regular season on Friday night in Monterey when they host Cannon County with kickoff set for 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Upper Cumberland Reporter 2 Facebook page with Josh Boles and Joe Joe Matheney on the call. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:50 p.m.
“We’ve just got to improve,” said Hughes. “We’ve got to continue to grow as a team.”
