Upperman Retires Metzgar And McCallister’s Numbers

Former Upperman football stars Blake Metzgar and Donoven McCallister were each honored on Friday night when their numbers were retired.

Metzgar and McCallister formed a backfield, with McCallister at quarterback and Metzgar at running back, which led the Bees to a 13-1 season and trip to the semifinal round of the postseason in 2018.

“There’s an Upperman Bee brotherhood,” said UHS head coach Adam Caine. “Donoven and Blake were such productive players. It warranted some recognition. It’s a big honor. I love those kids.”

Metzgar, number 24, played running back for the Bees. Known for his mixture of power and speed, he rushed for 1,959 yards and a school-record 39 touchdowns during his senior season in 2018.

McCallister, number five, was a multi-year starter as a dual-threat quarterback. In his junior and senior seasons, he threw for 2,879 yards and 24 touchdowns while adding 2,433 yards and 29 touchdowns on the ground.

McCallister plays at Tennessee Tech. Metzgar plays for Emory & Henry.

Across their careers, Metzgar and McCallister helped the Bees to 42 wins and three region titles. Their numbers were retired in a ceremony at halftime of Upperman’s 41-14 win over Macon County.
