The York Dragons and Dragonettes earned wins on the road in Crossville on Tuesday night against Cumberland County.

The Dragonettes defeated Cumberland County 63-52. Dragonettes pulled away in the second half to secure the win.

“For three quarters, I thought we played extremely well defensively,” said assistant coach Mike Johnson. “(Cumberland County) is a good team. They got hot, and we did what we had to do to close it out, but we’ve got to be better at closing out.”

The leading scorer for the Dragonettes was freshman Reese Beaty with 20 points. Following her, junior Ellie Leffew had 12 points. Junior Gabby Beaty scored 10 points. Seniors Laci Patton and Sage Smith both had 7 points and sophomore Emmy Crabtree tallied 6 points.

The Dragonettes will return to Crossville on Friday night when they play at 6 p.m. against Stone Memorial.

“We got the win against them last week at home but that is a hard place, in past history, for York to play,” said Johnson. “I’m hoping we go down there and hang our hat on the defense and as long as we’re defending, I think we will be alright.”

The York Dragons defeated Cumberland County in a tight battle Tuesday night 67-63.

The lead changed hands throughout the matchup, with the Dragons escaping with the victory.

“We were tickled to death,” said head coach Rodney Pile. “Obviously, we did not play great or smooth but we came out and got a lead… I was really proud that we didn’t throw in the towel and were ready to keep playing.”

The leading scorer for the Dragons was Nic Smith with 29 points. Following him, senior Jon Heddings and junior Blaine York both scored 10 points. Sophomore Myles Leffew had 9 points. Sophomore Jack Conaster had 5 points and sophomore Zack Bryd added 4 points.

The Dragons will return to Crossville on Friday night when they play at 7:30 p.m. against Stone Memorial.

“We had Stone last Tuesday, we had Cumberland County tonight, we have Stone (on) Friday night and we go to Cookeville next Tuesday, so we’ve got a little stretch right here that hopefully won’t kills us, but make us better,” said Pile. “Hopefully, we can learn from all of that and our mistakes…hopefully these games are showing us what we’re doing badly because we can see it not only on film but live as well, so hopefully that is giving us things to work on everyday in practice.”
