Cookeville senior Jackson Ray took the next step in his athletic and academic career on Wednesday, as he signed his national letter of intent to play football at Maryville.
“It feels great, even looking back last year, I never thought I’d be here,” Ray said. “It’s always been a dream of mine…I truly think dreams come true if you set your mind to it. Hard work can get you a long way.”
The decision to sign with Maryville came down to how much Ray felt he was wanted.
“Their coaches always showed me a lot of love,” Ray said. “That was probably the only head coach that really talked to me, and I was always told whoever showed you the most love, that’s where you were going to play.”
And his former head coach likes the fit for Ray at Maryville.
“He’s worked really hard to get to this stage,” said Jimmy Maynord. “It’s a great school he’s chosen in Maryville…I think it’s a perfect fit for him. Good school, close to Knoxville, close to home. That level of football is good football, and I think it’s a great fit for him.”
As far as what he will miss about playing for Cookeville, Ray says it’s the bond he shared with his teammates.
“The brotherhood, obviously the stuff on the field, but off the field too,” Ray said. “Just hanging out with your friends. That’s your best friends that you’ve grown up with. That’s what I’ll miss the most.”
