The public is invited to attend. The meal is Dutch treat. If you just want to listen in. You may do so via Zoom. The details are in the right section to be able to join that way.

Today and tomorrow (March 4-5) is the Upper Cumberland Home and Garden Show at the Hyder-Burks Ag Pavilion in Cookeville, TN. If you want to learn more about all this area has to offer, please come by and visit this show. We would enjoy having you stop by our booth. We will share our latest business of the month below as well.

Next week, Good Neighbors Theatre will be holding auditions on March 7 & 8 for “Blood Heat” (press release is below). This is going to be a good play about our local history.

Chamber Members, to help us best share your information with the public, please bring us (or arrange a pick up of) your lasted literature to prepare for the upcoming tourist season (or give us a call at your convenience to see if we have the latest).  We have lots of good interaction at this show. We need your information before that date to have it there.

Auditions Announced for “Blood Heat” at Good Neighbors Theatre
Good Neighbors Theatre is sending out a casting call for a very special play. “Blood Heat” has been written especially for GNT by Dr. J. Edward Gore of Nashville with arrangements through Judy Martin-Urban, local historian and novelist. GNT is excited to have Rachael Winningham directing this locally historically based play on the GNT stage.

Auditions will be Monday, March 7, and Tuesday, March 8, both at 7:00 PM at Good Neighbors Theatre, located at 8780 Highway 111 in Byrdstown, TN.  There are 14 men’s parts and three women’s parts available. All roles are for adults 18 years of age and above. Some parts do not require many lines for those who want to get involved with acting, but don’t have stage experience.

Rehearsals will be Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Performances will be June 3, 4, and 5 with a possible extension to June 10, 11, and 12. For those interested in helping with set design, construction, costuming, and other behind-the-scenes work, please come to the auditions and sign up for your interest.

The play centers around the happening in our area in the early days of the War Between the States, more commonly known as the Civil War. It takes place about the time of the Affair at Travisville, the first military action of the Civil War in Tennessee right along our Tennessee/Kentucky border in Pickett County. GNT produced “Blood Along the Wolf” in October 2010, also based on this time period and each performance was a total sellout, so this play also based on local legend and notorious Confederate cavalry raider, Champ Ferguson, is expected to be very popular as well.

Good Neighbors Theatre is an equal opportunity provider and employer.  Projects are partially funded under a grant contract with the State of Tennessee.

Cordell Hull Birthplace Museum State Park  has a variety of events/programs on a regular basis. Learn a new craft/skill or fine tune and old one. Check them out!

Business of the Month for February 2022

The Byrdstown – Pickett County Chamber of Commerce would like to congratulate Gibson Tax Service for being selected as the business of the month for February 2022.

Peanut Gibson got his start doing taxes helping a retired school teacher, and he says that’s what got him started in school teaching. He retired from school teaching in Pickett County 12 years ago and continued doing taxes for 38+ years.

We talked more about school teaching, and he said he taught a little bit of everything, mostly math, spelling, social studies, science and health. His daughter, Stephanie Coutta who works by her dad’s side, had her dad as a teacher in 6th grade.

Peanut says he has been a member of the chamber for at least 15 years maybe more. He was also on the County Commission, and he was chairman of the budget committee.

Peanut feels the area is growing as he is seeing more and more business at tax time. His business is seasonal and currently they are both very busy preparing tax returns and providing advice.

They are in a new location at 509 W Main Street, Byrdstown, TN 38549. The house belonged to Stephanie’s great-grandparent’s Arthur and Ova Pierce. It is absolutely beautiful inside and makes a great space for Peanut’s business.
