The White County Warriorettes took down Livingston Academy on Monday 3-1 to win their first match of the season.
White County opened the first set slowly however, as they fell behind 5-1 to the Lady Wildcats. This didn’t slow them down though, and they reeled off seven straight points to take an 8-5 lead. Both teams traded runs all the way to the end of the first set, as White Count took a 1-0 lead with a 25-22 win.
The Lady Wildcats opened the second set with another 5-1 advantage, though this time they wouldn’t trail for the remainder of the set. Livingston claimed the frame with a 25-15 win to knot the match up at 1-1.
White County took control in the third set with a 25-19 win, and then the Warriorettes closed the match out with a 25-17 win in the final set for the first win of the season.
“Tonight, they were a more complete team,” said WCHS head coach Logan Hicks. “As we have played in the past, we’ve had some hiccups here and there, but we were a good, all-around team.”
It would’ve been easy for the early deficit in either of the first two sets to break White County, but Hicks said he focused on keeping the energy positive to help them battle the adversity.
“I just tried to keep them up and tried to keep them focused,” Hicks said. “I didn’t want them to let one mistake turn into another, just focused on the next point.”
The early part of the season is where teams make their mistakes and grow. As far as what he wants to improve, Hicks says he wants his team to be louder when things are going their way.
“Confidence and enthusiasm on the court is important,” Hicks said. “We’re still a little dead when we score a point. Some of these teams, you can hear them from a mile away when they score, so I want us to be one of those teams.”
White County will battle Lebanon on Tuesday night, while Livingston will take on Macon County.
