Monterey Girls Run Away With District Win at Bledsoe

By Michael Lindsay

District 5AA play is off to a strong start for the Monterey Lady Wildcats as they won their league opener at Bledsoe County Thursday night, 62-26.

The Lady Wildcats (10-9, 1-0) were led by Kelsi Flanigan, who scored 14 points in the win. Lydia Phillips also hit double-figures with 12 points along with 10 by Abbie Sasser.

Monterey took control early as they led 11-7 after one quarter and 33-10 at halftime.

“The first quarter was a little bit slow for us, and it wasn’t where we wanted it to be,” said Monterey head coach Michelle Farley. “We can’t be doing that at this point in the season, but we may still be a little jet-lagged from Florida.”

The Lady Wildcats’ press defense was effective in the second half as they closed out strong, winning by a 63-26 margin.

“We put a little pressure on them on defense and got a few steals,” Farley added.

The Lady Wildcats improve to 1-0 in district play.

Monterey wastes no time returning to the hardwood as they travel to Clarkrange Friday evening. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m at Clarkrange.

Monterey (62): Kelsi Flanigan 14, Lydia Phillips 12, Abbie Sasser 10, Zoey Gore 8, Lindsey Wright 7, Haylee Trevathan 5, Kaci Flanigan 3, Allie Benjamin 3
