DeKalb’s Gottlied Signs With Cumberland To Play Football

by Rusty Ellis

DeKalb County senior Nolan Gottlied made his commitment to Cumberland University official on Friday, as he signed his NLI to play football for the Phoenix after graduation.

For Gottlied, it was the fulfillment of all of his hard work leading up to signing day.

“It really means a lot to me to be able to do this,” Gottlied said. “You have people that doubt you, and it’s good to prove them wrong.”

Gottlied played many roles for DeKalb County in his time as a Tiger, and head coach Steve Trapp has seen firsthand the work he’s put in to make it to this point.

“I’m just super proud of Nolan, this is a self-made deal for him,” Trapp said. “That work ethic that he’s had is what’s led him to have this opportunity…he’s a great kid and comes from a great family, and I’m super proud that he gets to go represent his family and DeKalb County at Cumberland University.”

As far as fit is concerned, Trapp believes Gottlied will find his place nicely at Cumberland.

“He played linebacker for us in the past, and he started at cornerback for us as a junior,” Trapp said. “He’s worked really hard to become the type of punter that he is, and he’ll work to get even better. I have no doubt  he’ll do that at the next level.”

When it comes to what he’s excited for, Gottlied says he’s looking forward to being closer to home.

“I just like Cumberland because it’s close to home and it’s a good school,” Gottlied said. “Meeting new people and making new friends is something I’m looking forward to…I love the coaches, and really just love what they’re all about.”
