A 7th-inning rally by the Sequatchie County Indians was too much for the Monterey Wildcats Monday as they fell in District 5-2A play, 14-9.
The teams entered the 7th inning tied at 9 before the Indians posted 5 runs in the frame to secure the victory.
Evan Robinson led the Wildcats at the plate as he hit two homers along with a home run by Riley Franz.
Monterey held a 2-1 lead after the first inning before Sequatchie posted 3 runs in the second to lead 4-2 entering the third inning.
The Wildcats answered in the bottom of the third with a Robinson solo homer and a run by Dylan Whitehead via a Will McCary grounder to tie the game at 4. Monterey took a 5-4 lead on the next at-bat as a Dawson Hedgecoth grounder scored John Looney.
Sequatchie County jumped ahead 8-5 in the tip of the fourth before Monterey again scored 3 runs in the bottom of the frame as Franz hit a 2-run homer followed by Robinson’s second solo shot to left to tie the game at 8.
Monterey briefly took a 9-8 lead in the bottom of the fifth as Hedgecoth scored on a wild pitch with 2 outs.
Sequatchie answered to tie the game at 9 in the top of the 6th before 3 Monterey errors in the top of the 7th inning helped the Indians score 5 unanswered runs and pick up the 14-9 victory.
The teams are scheduled to meet again this afternoon in Dunlap for game two of their district series.
