Smith County Takes Down York Institute, Monroe County In Alex Cassetty Classic

The Smith County Owls picked up two non-district baseball victories Saturday afternoon as they defeated York Institute 12-3 and Monroe County (KY) 10-1 in the Alex Cassetty Classic in Gainesboro.

 

GAME ONE

Smith County overcame an early 3-run deficit to take down the York Institute Dragons in game one as the Owls recorded 11 hits in their 5-inning contest.

Center fielder Kylan Johnson led Smith County as he went 2-2 with 3 RBIs, 2 doubles and 2 RBIs. Ben Mimms picked up the win on the mound as he gave up only one hit and struck out 3 over the final 3 and 2/3 innings.

York Institute got on the board in the top of the first inning as a Tanner Tallent single to left scored Breyden Choate and Matt Clark along with a Lee Kearns grounder to score Tallent, putting the Dragons ahead 3-0.

After a scoreless first inning, Smith County dialed in at the plate with 4 runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-3 lead.

A TJ Testa sacrifice fly scored Ty Martin to start the run, followed by a Johnson double to score Hudson Graber and Maddux Bradley to tie the game at 3 runs each.

Smith County took a 4-3 lead later in the inning as Johnson stole home with two outs in the bottom of the second.

Smith County took control in the bottom of the third inning as the Owls scored 8 runs in the frame to take a 12-3 lead over the Dragons. A Martin grounder scored Kaden Powell to start the inning followed by a Testa bunt to score Graber to put the Owls ahead 6-3.

Smith County scored on the next two at-bats as a Johnson double to left scored Bradley and a Wyatt Claywell sacrifice fly scored Testa to extend the Owls’ advantage to 8-3 with 2 outs in the third.

Smith County posted 4 more runs with two outs in the third inning as Johnson and Nathan Preston stole home before doubles by Powell and Martin drove in runs to put the Owls up 12-3.

Neither team made it home from there as Smith County held on to defeat York Institute 12-3 in 5 innings.

 

GAME TWO

The second half of Smith County’s doubleheader saw the Owls continue their hot offense with 7 hits in 5 innings against the Falcons.

Johnson went 2-3 with 2 runs scored and an RBI along with Claywell going 2-3 with 3 runs scored. Pitcher Case Collins recorded the win as he gave up 1 hit and struck out 4 over 4 innings.

After a 1-1 first inning, a hot second inning was the formula again for Smith County as the Owls posted 6 runs in the frame to take a 7-1 lead.

A Johnson single scored Testa to open things up in the second before Smith County scored 3 runs via 2 bases-loaded walks and Powell being hit by a pitch. A Bradley single drove in Bennett Gammon to put Smith County up 7-1 after 2 innings.

The Owls tacked on 3 runs in the bottom of the fifth via singles from Ethan Crockett and Gammon to score Johnson, Claywell and Jacob Lapham and give the Owls the 10-1 victory.

Smith County improves to 11-5 overall and is scheduled to play at Upperman on Wednesday.
