DeKalb County Opens District Tournament Play With 6-2 Win at Sparta

Postseason baseball has arrived on the Upper Cumberland as DeKalb County opened District 7-3A play with a 6-2 victory at White County on Wednesday.

“I’m excited for the guys,” said DeKalb County head coach Tad Webb. “This has been one of those years that we’ve had our tough times. The last little bit we’ve been playing well, but just haven’t been seeing it on the scoreboard. Tonight was fulfilling with what we’ve been going through.”

The Tigers racked up 10 hits against White County, led by shortstop Konner Young who went 3-4 with 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored and a double. Catcher Ty Webb went 2-3 with a double as well.

Carter Cook pitched a complete seven innings for DeKalb County as the righty surrendered only 4 hits and 2 runs while striking out 5.

“He threw lights out,” coach Webb said. “We knew we had our two guys ready to go tonight, but he was able to hold the fort down throughout the game.”

DeKalb County struck first in the top of the third inning as a Cook double to center scored Young before Andrew Dakas and Cook both scored on a wild pitch two batters later to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

“Anytime you’re in a sudden-death game like this, you want to get a little bit of a cushion where the boys can breathe a little bit,” Webb said.

DeKalb County kept their offense rolling in the top of the fourth inning as back-to-back doubles from Young and Ty Webb scored Cam Cabellero, Carson Donnell and Young to give the Tigers a 6-0 lead after four.

White County got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning as an Austin Pionke single to right drove in Jacob Smith. The Warriors scored on the next at-bat as an errant pickoff attempt resulted in Sam Dicus scoring to make the score 6-2.

Cook forced a ground-out to end the fifth inning to keep the 6-2 lead intact. White County had runners on runners on first and second in the bottom of the sixth before Cook ended the frame by forcing another ground-out.

“That’s something that’s built throughout the year,” Webb said. “Early on, we struggled in those moments. The trials they’ve been through have prepared them for what they saw tonight.”

Cook made quick work of Sparta in the bottom of the seventh as he retired 3 Warrior batters in order to seal the 6-2 victory.

DeKalb County’s win in the elimination game advances them to the double-elimination portion of the tournament as they’re scheduled to travel to Livingston Academy Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

“We look forward to it and a long week,” Webb said. “It’s something our guys are ready for.”
