Four area teams took the field in Carthage Friday evening for their final preseason scrimmages as Gordonsville, Clay County, DeKalb County and Smith County competed along with Watertown and Westmoreland.
Gordonsville opened the action against Westmoreland in a scoreless two-quarter scrimmage against the Eagles. Two Tiger turnovers proved costly as Gordonsville didn’t find the end zone in their final preseason action.
Gordonsville opens the regular season on Thursday, Aug. 17 as they host Smith County.
DeKalb County and Clay County faced off in the second matchup as the Tigers won 10-0. Clay County threatened inside the Clay County red zone until a tipped pass was intercepted by DeKalb’s Andrew Dakas.
Neither team found the end zone in the first quarter. DeKalb County posted the evening’s first points with 7:27 remaining in the second period as backup quarterback Jordan Parker hit Dakas on a 23-yard touchdown strike to make the score 7-0 after the PAT.
Adrian Prater tacked on another field goal later in the quarter to wrap up the 10-0 victory.
DeKalb County opens the season on Friday, Aug. 18 at Warren County while Clay County travels to York Institute for their first game.
Smith County hosted Watertown in the evening’s finale in which the Purple Tigers defeated the home-standing Owls, 3-0.
Smith County opens the regular season with a visit to their neighbors to the south as the Owls are set to travel to Gordonsville on Thursday, Aug. 17.
