The Stone Memorial Lady Panthers won their season opener against the White County Warriorettes 3-1 on Monday night.
The Lady Panthers won the first two sets (25-23, 25-13) before losing in the third set (25-17).
“We felt a little nervous in the beginning, but we are glad to get the first game out of the way,” said Head Coach Tori Permenter. “We got that first win and we can only go up from here.”
The fourth set was a turning point for the Lady Panthers. The Lady Panthers were down 16-12, when Coach Permenter received her first yellow card of the season. The Lady Panthers took this energy and won the fourth set 25-23 and the match 3-1.
“I average one yellow card a season,” said Permenter. “I am very competitive and the girls just feed off of that.”
The Lady Panthers needed a boost from the bench in the fourth set to pull away.
“Alyssa Houston coming off of the bench, having a really good serving run, that is just a testament to no matter how much you play, you can have a difference in the game,” Permenter said. “She was that difference in the fourth set to get us back into it.”
Stone Memorial will host Watertown Tuesday at 5 p.m. in their home opener. White County is set to travel to Stewarts Creek on Thursday at 6 p.m.
