The Cookeville Lady Cavs are the District 7-3A champions, as they took down Wilson Central and Lebanon on Sunday afternoon to close out a perfect run through their district schedule.
Semifinal vs. Wilson Central
Before winning their championship match over Lebanon, the Lady Cavaliers cruised to a 3-0 semifinal victory over Wilson Central in Tuesday afternoon’s first game, 25-16, 25-10 and 25-19.
Cookeville opened the first set on a 7-2 run and held a 14-4 lead midway through the first set before a Brecken Windle point wrapped up the 25-16 set victory.
The Lady Cavs were tied with Wilson Central at 7 points each in the second set before Cookeville went on an 18-3 run to win the set 25-10 and setting up the sweep in the third set by a 25-19 final.
Championship vs. Lebanon
The Lady Cavs then finished off their perfect run with a 3-0 win over the Lebanon Lady Devils, as it was the third time this season Cookeville’s defeated LHS.
“It’s an amazing feeling, I’ve never felt better,” said CHS head coach Staci Wiegand. “We knew that winning this tournament would take heart, so that’s what we focused on. Momentum and heart and fire, and that’s what they delivered.”
It also serves as a testament to just how hard the team has worked since the start of the season, as Wiegand says she saw a great work ethic in her group from start-to-finish.
“It’s incredibly rewarding,” Wiegand said. “With the strategies that we’ve implemented to make us the team that we are, these girls have worked hard. I’ve never seen a group work harder.”
Cookeville will now turn their focus to the region tournament, as the Lady Cavs will host. The dates are TBD and this will be updated when more information is available.
