Cumberland County High School senior Jesla Uribe made her college plans official Friday afternoon as she signed with the Roane State Lady Raiders soccer program.
Uribe played multiple positions with the Lady Jets over her four-year career and is looking to play on the defensive side for the Lady Raiders.
“When I went to their prospect camp, most of the girls they had already signed were forwards and midfielders,” said Uribe. “I play a little outside back, so I’ll probably be playing that. ”
Roane State is a community college based in Harriman and is forming the first women’s soccer program in school history under head coach Donnie Green.
“Jesla came to our ID camp and I was really impressed with her,” said coach Green. “I knew she was somebody that would help our team. I think she can really play; she’s good with her feet and her soccer knowledge is really good.”
“I think it’s huge for a kid like Jesla,” said Cumberland County head coach Cub Whitson. “Her coachability is great; she’s played almost every position as a Lady Jet and has done a good job. Her IQ and understanding the ins and outs are big.”
Uribe missed the final part of her senior season with the Lady Jets due to injury, but is entering the Lady Raiders program at full strength.
“I didn’t think I was going to play again when I got hurt,” she said. “So having this opportunity is great for me. I tore a ligament in my foot and I was very upset about it, but I’m good to play now.”
While at Roane State, Uribe has an education path in mind.
“At first, I had my major as criminal justice because I wanted to be an immigration lawyer, but I changed it to psychology for either immigration law or psychology,” said Uribe. “I’ve grown up around immigrants and feel like I’d be good at helping people with that. Growing up, I went to counseling with my siblings and I feel like that definitely helped us. I would love to help people the way I’ve been helped.”
