Smith County’s Airyn Enoch Signs Basketball Scholarship With Cumberland University

by Rusty Ellis

CARTHAGE – Smith County senior Airyn Enoch made her commitment to Cumberland University official on Monday, as she signed her national letter of intent to join the basketball program upon graduation.

“I feel great, it’s exciting to see everybody here to support me,” Enoch said. “I had a few different colleges looking at me, and Cumberland just had everything I was looking for. It’s 20 minutes from home, and I’ll be comfortable there.”

Smith County head coach Matt Ferrell spent the last two seasons of Enoch’s high school career coaching the senior and he says her leadership is one of the primary aspects the program will miss from her.

“Her leadership characteristics are second-to-none,” Ferrell said. “When she leaves the floor and goes to the locker room, that’s the part that we’ll miss the most. She was already doing things she asked other kids to do, she had a real knack for that.”

Those same characteristics played a key part in Enoch’s senior season that saw the Lady Owls make it to the Class 2A State Tournament, and Ferrell says it’s for those reasons he feels she’ll fit in right away.

“They do a lot of things similar to how we do them here,” Ferrell said. “I think that’s one of the things that clicked for her right away, there are certain things they like to do, and she though they sounded a lot like what we do. Not many kids get to play in college, but she gets to be one of them so we’re proud of her.”

Enoch says she’ll miss the bonds she created over her years in Carthage, but that she’s equally excited for the future ahead.

“That’s the biggest thing I’m going to miss is the girls,” Enoch said. “Some of them I’ve played with for eight years, so that’ll be something I’m going to miss. I’m looking forward to playing at the next level and meeting new people and playing for another great coach. I think I’m ready.”
