High school football playoff races are heating up entering the final week of the regular season. What’s locked in and what’s on the line for each region in the Upper Cumberland:
Region 4-1A
Gordonsville (6-3) at Clay County (7-2): These two play on Friday; winner wins Region 4-1A, the loser finishes second. Both teams will host first-round playoff games against either Chattanooga Prep, Sale Creek or Copper Basin.
Red Boiling Springs (3-6): RBS plays Jo Byrns this week with the winner finishing third and loser finishing fourth in the region. RBS will travel in the first round of the playoffs to either Whitwell or South Pittsburg.
Region 2-2A
York Institute (7-2) is playing for a Region 2-2A championship on Thursday at Polk County. If the Dragons win, they finish the season undefeated in region play and the #1 overall seed.
If the Dragons lose at Polk County, they could potentially fall to the #2 or #3 seed. If the Dragons lose and Oneida defeats Bledsoe County, York would be the #2 seed. If York loses to Polk and Bledsoe County defeats Oneida, York would finish #3 overall.
If the Dragons finish as a #1 or #2 seed, they will host Eagleton or Hampton in the first round. If they finish third, they will travel to Happy Valley.
Region 3-2A
Smith County (2-7) and Monterey (6-3) play this week for the #3 seed and will travel to either Marion County, Forrest or Cascade in the first round of the playoffs. The loser will finish #4 and also travel to one of the three listed schools.
Region 4-4A
Upperman (9-0) has already secured the Region 4-4A #1 seed followed by White County (7-2) locked in at #2 regardless of this week’s results. Both teams will host playoff games in the first round. Macon County (7-2) travels to Stone Memorial (5-4) on Friday with the winner taking the #3 seed and loser #4.
Upperman will host Signal Mountain in the first round of the playoffs while White County will host either Soddy Daisy or Red Bank. Macon County and Stone Memorial will travel to either Loudon, Soddy Daisy or Red Bank.
Region 4-6A
Cookeville (7-2) will travel in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to either Riverdale or Oakland regardless of their result on Thursday.
