Tuesday night’s home opener for the Cookeville Cavaliers and Lady Cavaliers was a sweep for the home team as they took down York Institute in a pair of non-district contests. The Lady Cavs opened the evening with a 51-33 victory followed by the Cavaliers winning by a 64-30 final score.
Girls
Cookeville improved to 3-0 with Tuesday’s victory as three Lady Cavs scored in double figures led by Macy Hudson with 16 points and 7 rebounds. Cara Lee Gilbert tacked on 15 points along with Allie Gillies scoring 13 points and dishing out 6 assists.
The Dragonettes are without Iowa State signee point guard Reese Beaty and were led by Raylee Werner with 10 points and Emma Cooper with 9.
Cookeville opened the game on a 10-0 run via a Gillies basket with 2:34 remaining in the first quarter and held 12-2 lead after one quarter.
The Lady Cavs led by as many as 13 points (20-7) in the second quarter before taking a 24-12 lead into halftime. Cookeville maintained their double-digit lead throughout the third quarter and led 33-23 entering the fourth.
York Institute cut their deficit to 9 points (33-24) early in the fourth quarter, but got no closer as Cookeville pushed their lead back to double digits for the rest of the contest to win by a 51-33 final score.
The Lady Cavaliers improve to 3-0 overall and are scheduled to travel to Knox Webb on Tuesday while the Dragonettes fall to 3-1 and host Gatlinburg-Pittman on Tuesday.
Boys
The Cookeville Cavaliers picked up their second consecutive victory Tuesday night as they defeated York Institute 64-30.
Four Cavaliers scored in double figures as Jaren Davis and Bryce Herren scored 12 points each followed by Jalen Denk and Bo Maxwell with 10.
Davis added 6 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals to his stat line while Walker Redding led the Cavaliers on the glass with 8 rebounds.
It was York who jumped out to an early 6-2 lead before the Cavaliers battled back to tie the game at 9-9 at the end of the first period. Cookeville took control in the second period as they outscored the Dragons 20-5 in the frame to lead 29-14 at halftime.
The Cavaliers kept their foot on the gas in the third quarter as they extended their lead to 51-18 by the end of the frame before winning by a 64-30 final score.
Cookeville improves to 2-1 and travels to Webb School of Knoxville on Tuesday while York falls to 0-2 and hosts Gatlinburg-Pittman on Tuesday.
