The White County Warriors returned to action Tuesday evening after a rainout on Monday and earned a District 7-3A road victory as they defeated Stone Memorial, 4-3.
Third baseman Cole Gentry led the Warriors at the plate as he went 2-3 with a double, 2 runs scored and 3 stolen bases while Austin Pionke went 2-4 with 2 doubles. Matthew Wilson earned the victory on the mound as he surrendered only 2 hits and 1 walk in two and one-third innings of shutout. baseball.
Stone Memorial struck first in the bottom of the first inning as a Gage Eldridge grounder scored Kyle Hinch to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
White County took the lead in the top of the fourth inning as Eli Smith and Gentry scored via Panther errors to take a 2-1 lead.
Stone Memorial retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth as a Talyn Hurd single to center scored Cade Wilson and Griffin Templeton, flipping the lead back in the Panthers’ favor at 3-2.
The Warriors took advantage of a Stone Memorial error in the top of the sixth inning to score Smith and Gentry to take a 4-3 advantage.
Wilson and Will Thomas went to work on the mound from there to secure White County’s 4-3 district win in Crossville.
The Warriors improve to 9-15 overall and 2-7 in district play while Stone Memorial falls to 12-13 and 5-4. The teams are scheduled to play game 2 in Sparta at 6 p.m. weather permitting.
