The Cookeville Lady Cavalier lacrosse team made history in the inaugural season of TSSAA-sanctioned lacrosse as they finished runners-up in Class AA following Saturday’s 14-4 loss to Brentwood in the state championship game at Ravenwood.
“These girls were some of the first I started coaching,” said Cookeville head coach Resa Roberts. “Just to see the same girls make it this far gives a whole new appeal. This is by far the most special group of seniors I’ve had; everybody gave their all and played for each other.”
“The biggest thing with the TSSAA sanctioning is the respect it gives us in the community,” added Roberts. “The trophy means a lot more and we have a lot more people interested in playing.”
Anzly Roberts scored three goals for the Lady Cavaliers along with one by Addison Bray.
Brentwood led 2-1 after the first period before outscoring the Lady Cavs 7-1 in the second to lead 9-2 at halftime. Brentwood extended their lead to 12-2 after three before winning by a 14-4 final score.
Cookeville finishes the season at 10-6 overall and Class 2A runners-up.
“This game is not indicative of the team that showed up today,” said Roberts. “These girls have worked so hard every single day, and I’m super proud of them.”
