A 4:07 stretch of the second quarter was the difference Thursday evening at Kingston (2-1) as the Yellow Jackets reeled off 3 touchdowns during the stretch en route to a 30-6 win over Cumberland County (0-3).
Kingston took the opening drive of Thursday’s game to the one-yard line before a goal line stand by the Jets forced a turnover on downs. The Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard on the next play though as they tackled the Jets in the end zone for a safety to take a 2-0 lead.
Neither team found the end zone through the rest of the first quarter over half of the second quarter. Kingston faced a third and 24 4:34 remaining from their own 41-yard line, where the Jackets broke loose on a 59-yard sweep to the end zone for a touchdown to go up 9-0.
Kingston’s defense got involved on the ensuing possession as they recovered an Cumberland County fumble on the CCHS 22-yard line, setting up a touchdown run on the next play to extend their lead to 16-0 with 2:45 left in the first half.
The Jets answered on the next drive as Liam Stephens took a screen pass 63 yards to the Kingston 10-yard line. Quarterback Isaiah McMillan found the end zone three plays later on a 13-yard scramble for a touchdown, making the score 16-6 with 48 seconds left in the period.
Kingston wasted no time answering as they returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to take a 23-6 halftime lead.
The Yellow Jackets tacked on a 27-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to take a 30-6 advantage. Neither team scored from there to make the final score 30-6 Kingston.
Up next for Cumberland County is a trip to Howard (0-2) next Friday.
