One of the Upper Cumberland’s biggest matchups of the 2025 season lived up to the hype Friday evening at Livingston Academy as the White County Warriors (4-1, 1-0) defeated the homestanding Wildcats (4-1, 0-1), 14-13.
“This was two good teams playing,” said White County head coach David Foster. “We were fighting for every yard. We kept believing we had a shot, and ultimately our guys made the play.”
White County trailed 13-7 with 1:12 remaining in the fourth quarter until quarterback Tucker Pinion connected with junior receiver Bryson Hogg on a 55-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 13-13. Hogg caught the pass at the 25-yard line, broke two tackles and outran two more defenders on his way to the end zone. Noah Skeith connected on the extra point to give White County a 14-13 lead with 1:01 remaining.
“We’ve got kids that want to set up and do what’s asked,” said Foster. “Bryson’s had to block his tail off all season and he has great ball skills. In another offense, he maybe has 20 or 30 catches this year. But he’s been unselfish and made the play in the passing game when we called on them.”
Cornerback Eli Smith put the game on ice with a game-winning interception on the ensuing Livingston drive to secure the 14-13 victory.
Neither team scored in the first half with the game deadlocked at 0-0 at halftime. A White County punt late in the third quarter backed Livingston up to their own one-yard line with 1:23 remaining in the frame. The Wildcats didn’t waste any time responding, as quarterback Adrian Jenkins stood in his own end zone and connected with senior receiver Rocco Carwile down the middle of the field for a 99-yard touchdown pass to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead entering the fourth quarter.
White County tied the game at 7-7 early in the fourth quarter via a 21-yard Cole Sims touchdown run. Livingston retook the lead with 7:36 remaining via a Kaden Weitzel touchdown run. Livingston led 13-7 following a failed extra point.
“Livingston did a fantastic job all night,” said Foster. “We tried to keep them in check, and every time we thought we had them they’d make a play. They were difficult to prepare for.”
Neither team found the end zone again until Pinion’s game-winning touchdown strike to Hogg with 1:01 remaining to take the 14-13 lead and ultimately the victory.
White County improves to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in region play. The Warriors host Class 4A defending state champion Macon County (5-0, 1-0) next week in region action.
“We’re 1-0 tonight and are going to enjoy this tonight, but we’ll all be at work Saturday morning preparing for the next one.”
