MURFREESBORO – The Gordonsville Tigerettes finished runners-up in the TSSAA Class A State Championship match on Friday in Murfreesboro in a 3-1 (15-25, 25-15, 25-13, 25-20) loss against Eagleville.
The Tigerettes got a fast start in their first state championship appearance in program history, but the Eagles controlled the final three sets in the season finale.
The Tigerettes started fast at MTSU’s Murphy Center, rolling through the first set to a 25-15 win.
The Eaglettes answered in the middle two sets with 25-15 and 25-13 wins to take a 2-1 lead. The Tigerettes trailed again in the fourth set before battling back to cut the deficit to 19-18, but the Eagles pulled away late to secure the state championship.
Derionna Bell led the Tigerettes with 20 kills. Lanie Foster tallied eight kills. Emma Crawford and Kamara Smith each added three while Brooke Briggs and Christina Ray notched one. Briggs also added 34 assists.
The Tigeretes finished the season with a 26-2 overall record. It was their first trip to the state tournament in school history.
