The Gordonsville Tigers are off to their best start on the football field in 39 years as they defeated Red Boiling Springs 42-0 on Thursday at Turney Ford Field to improve to 9-0.
“Our kids did a great job and played hard,” said Gordonsville head coach Stephen Jackson. “We got everybody in, and that’s not easy late in the season.”
Five different Tigers found the end zone in Thursday’s win; a win that came a day early due to the Gordonsville volleyball team’s upcoming Class 1A state championship match at 1 p.m. on Friday.
“The kids handled it great this week,” said Jackson. “We took off Tuesday so the guys could go cheer on the volleyball team.”
After forcing an RBS punt, Turner Bucher opened the contest with a 26-yard touchdown run to put the Tigers up 7-0. Senior quarterback J Foster connected with Brooks Stafford on their next drive for a 25-yard touchdown pass to put Gordonsville up 14-0 after one quarter.
Jemario Williams broke loose for a 34-yard touchdown run to open the second quarter, giving the Tigers a 21-0 lead at halftime.
Stafford wasted no time extending Gordonsville’s lead to start the second half as he returned the opening kickoff 79 yards to the end zone, putting his team up 28-0.
The Tigers’ second passing touchdown of the day came from Mason Cross as he connected with Christian Hawkins on a 49-yard touchdown pass to give Gordonsville a 35-0 lead after three quarters.
Freshman Ryder Roberts punched on a one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to give Gordonsville the 42-0 victory.
Up next for the 9-0 Tigers is their regular season finale against their neighbors to the north; a Region 4-2A showdown with Smith County (4-4, 2-1).
“It’s huge,” said Jackson. “It’s the battle of Smith County for one, and it’s going to be a really good ball game that comes down to the fourth quarter. We’re looking forward to it and excited for a region championship opportunity.”
