Gordonsville Takes Down East Robertson In 5-Sets For Region 4-1A Championship; Tigerettes Host Sale Creek In Thursday’s Sectional

The Gordonsville Tigerettes are Region 4-1A champions following a 5-set victory in Tuesday’s region title game in Jamestown against East Robertson.

Gordonsville and East Robertson are no strangers as Tuesday was their fourth meeting of the season with each matchup going 5 sets. They split their regular season games before the Tigerettes defeated the Lady Indians in both the District 8-1A and Region 4-1A championship games.

Gordonsville took an early lead in Tuesday’s region championship as they raced out to a 12-5 advantage. The Lady Indians answered with a 12-2 run to take a 17-14 lead before Gordonsville came back with a run of their own to tie it again at 18 via a Melinda Holder tip. Gordonsville took a 19-18 lead on a Kamara Smith block and didn’t look back in the first en route to a 25-20 set win.

East Robertson answered in the second to win 25-23, tying the contest at one set each. Gordonsville won the third set 25-19 on an Ashlyn Naylor kill followed by East Robertson wining the fourth set 25-19 to force a winner-take all fifth set to 15.

After trading points through the first part of the fifth set, East Robertson held an 8-6 lead before back-to-back errors tied the game again at 8-8. Gordonsville took advantage of the East Robertson errors and took a 10-8 lead on a Smith block and Lanie Foster kill.

The teams traded points until East Robertson took a 14-13 lead with the serve in hand, but back-to-back points from Naylor staved off elimination and gave Gordonsville a 15-14 lead. The Lady Indians tied the game again at 15, but Gordonsville’s Derionna Bell put the game away with a pair of kills to seal the 17-15 victory for the Tigerettes.

Up next for Gordonsville is the Class 1A sectional round on Thursday at 6 p.m. at home against Sale Creek with a TSSAA state tournament berth on the line.
