Smith County Wraps Up Historic Soccer Season In State Tournament Quarterfinals

By Michael Lindsay

The Smith County Lady Owls put a bow on their historic 2025 soccer season Tuesday evening in Chattanooga as they fell to Westview in the Class 1A state tournament quarterfinals, 9-0.

Tuesday’s state tournament match marks the first state tournament appearance in program history. The Lady Owls finish this season 15-3-1 overall and champions of District 5-1A and runners-up of Region 3-1A.

“Our community rallied behind us this year,” said Smith County head coach Nicholus Bussell. “This group was more balanced and stepped up in a big way. Our seniors did great job setting a tone early in the summer. I couldn’t be more proud of my kids; they fought the whole time and held their heads high. We finally made some history; we’ve been in that sectional game four times, and this year we made that next step.”

Tuesday was the final game for six Lady Owl seniors including Jordyn Brown, Addie Cripps, Sophie Shoemake, Kacie Chiapperini, Grace Smith and Riley Davis.

“We’ve had some great seniors before us that laid the foundation,” said Bussell. “This group worked every day and got better, and they built a family here and played for each other.”
