STATE TOURNAMENT: Gordonsville Volleyball Sweeps First Round Matchup Against Union City, 3-0

The Gordonsville Tigerettes rolled into the semifinal round of the TSSAA Class A state volleyball tournament on Tuesday in Murfreesboro in a 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-15) win over Union City. 

The Tigerettes, who are making their first state tournament appearance in program history, dominated the final two sets as they cruised to the final four of the tournament. 

“We didn’t start off our best,” said GHS head coach Brian Leslie. “We struggled a little bit passing, which isn’t what we’re used to. Once we got going, we figured out what they were doing, we settled in and made a good push. We came out lights out in that second one and were able to get it in three. That was pretty sweet.”

Gordonsville trailed 10-8 early in the first set before rallying to tie the match back at 14-14. After trading points, the Tigerettes retook the lead at 20-19 before going on to win the first set 25-22 via a Derionna Bell kill.

The Tigerettes took an 8-3 lead early in the second set via a Lanie Foster kill. Gordonsville extended their lead to double digits (17-7) via another Foster kill before going on to win the set 25-13.

Union City opened the third set on a 9-4 run before Gordonsville stormed back to take their first lead of the set at 13-12 via a Melinda Holder ace.

Holder’s ace was the first of four consecutive to take a 16-12 lead en route to Gordonsville’s 25-16 victory in the set to sweep the match, 3-0.

The Tigerettes will face the winner of Summertown (39-8) and CSAS (28-7) on Wednesday at noon with the winner advancing to the state championship game.
