Gordonsville Advances To Class 2A Second Round Via 35-7 Victory Over York Institute

By Michael Lindsay

The Gordonsville Tigers (11-0) opened the 2025 Class 2A playoffs with a victory Thursday night as they defeated York Institute (1-10), 35-7.

“I thought it was a great game,” said Gordonsville head coach Stephen Jackson. “It’s the playoffs; it’s going to be ugly games at times, and we talk about adversity all the time. The guys kept battling over and over and came out with the win.”

Tiger quarterback J Foster rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another in the win.

“We faced a bunch of adversity with turnovers and a blocked punt, but we found a way to fight through it all and came out on top,” said Foster.

Gordonsville got on the board first with 5:07 remaining in the opening quarter as Lee Scurlock broke loose around the left side for a 24-yard touchdown run to put his team up 7-0.

The Tigers extended their lead early in the second quarter as Foster got involved in the run game with a 21-yard touchdown run to give Gordonsville a 14-0 lead with 9:11 remaining until halftime.

York Institute responded on their ensuing drive as a long completion to Joseph Linder set up a 1-yard touchdown run by the senior a few plays later, cutting Gordonsville’s lead to 14-7 with 3:40 remaining in the second quarter.

Gordonsville got the last laugh of the first half, however, as Foster hit Waylon Kennedy on a 34-yard touchdown pass with 44 seconds remaining in the first half to give the Tigers a 21-7 halftime lead.

Gordonsville’s defense kept the Dragons out of the end zone in the second half while Foster and Jemario Williams rushed in a touchdown each to make the final score 35-7.

Up next for the Tigers is another home playoff game next Friday as they’ll host the winner of Oneida (5-5) and West Greene (1-9).
