The defending Class 3A state champion Upperman Bees (26-5) earned their first postseason championship in their route to a title defense as they defeated Cumberland County (19-10, 4-4) in the District 7-3A championship, 60-37.
Reigning Class 3A Mr. Basketball Ty Cobb led the Bees with 26 points and 6 assists to earn the district tournament MVP award. All-tournament selection forward Colton Johnson posted a double-double with 19 points and 17 rebounds in the win. Upperman’s Joseph Maynard and Jack Torrence were also named to the all-tournament team along with Cumberland County’s Andrew Dennis, Sol Sitton and Shaeffer Sitton.
Both teams will take the floor at home again on Saturday in the Region 4-3A quarterfinals. Upperman will host Central Magnet while Cumberland County will host Watertown. White County will travel to District 8-3A champion Macon County while Stone Memorial will travel to 8-3A runner-up DeKalb County.
