The District 7-1A tournament tipped off Tuesday evening in Livingston as Clay County defeated Red Boiling Springs in both the girls and boys 4 vs. 5 matchup.
The Lady Bulldogs erased a 15-point second-half deficit en route to a 49-47 victory while Cole Eads hit a school-record 11 three-pointers in the Bulldogs’ 84-50 win.
Girls
The Clay County Lady Bulldogs advance to the District 7-1A tournament semifinals and Region 4-1A tournament following their win over Red Boiling Springs on Tuesday.
Ella Eads led the Lady Bulldogs with 18 points along with 11 from Baylor Walden and 10 by Natalie Smith. Zoe McDuffy led Red Boiling Springs with 14 points followed by 13 from Alie Jenkins and 9 by Sidney Massengill.
The Lady Bulldogs trailed 32-16 late in the second quarter and 36-21 at halftime. Red Boiling Springs held a 41-26 advantage with 3:39 remaining in the third quarter before Clay County reeled off a 20-4 run to take a 46-45 lead with 4:15 left in the fourth quarter. Clay County held on to their lead from there as a Red Boiling Springs last-second heave fell short to secure Clay County’s 49-47 victory.
Up next for Clay County is the District 7-1A tournament semifinals against #1 overall seed Pickett County. The Lady Bobcats swept the regular season series with Clay County by defeating them 67-29 and 47-38.
#4 Clay County vs. #1 Pickett County is scheduled to tip off Thursday at Livingston Academy 6:30 p.m. followed by #2 Jackson County vs. #3 Clarkrange.
Boys
Clay County senior Cole Eads etched his name into the Bulldog record book Tuesday night as he hit a school-record 11 three-pointers en route to 38 points in a 84-50 victory over Red Boiling Springs in the District 7-1A tournament play-in game.
The previous school record was held by current Lady Bulldogs junior Haylen Garrison, who hit 10 three-pointers against Wartburg last season.
Nolan Adams tacked on 14 points in the win while Gage Haskins led Red Boiling Springs with 19 points.
Clay County led 19-14 after one quarter and took a 36-27 lead into the locker room at halftime. Eads hit 6 first-half three-pointers along with a 2 for 20 points.
Eads hit 5 three-pointers in the third quarter as the Bulldogs put the game out of reach by outscoring Red Boiling Springs 27-7 in the frame. Clay County led 64-34 entering the fourth quarter, where they cruised to an 84-50 victory.
Up next for Clay County is the District 7-1A tournament semifinals against #1 overall seed Pickett County. The Bobcats swept the regular season series with Clay County by defeating them 64-50 and 80-66.
